The Challenge

A modern walk for a classic home.

The owners of this Central Virginia colonial wanted a new front-yard hardscape to replace a tired old approach — something that would feel like it had always belonged to a century-old home with a green front door, white columns, and a brick foundation.

The challenge was twofold: hold a meaningful grade change with new dry-stacked retaining walls, then run bluestone steps from the drive up to the front porch in a way that looked effortless. No flashy tricks — just stone, set right.

“Stone tells you when you’ve set it right. Most of the work is in the listening.”

The Snow Knows Way

The Build

Stone by stone.

Snow Knows crews built the walls and steps in-house from start to finish — site prep, drainage, dry-stacked walls, bluestone treads cut and set on site.

Walls go up first — every stone hand-selected and set.
Bluestone treads cap the walls and form the new walk.
Hand-cut detail — the kind that doesn’t happen on a clipboard.

The Result

Walks that earn their place.

Hand-set dry-stacked walls with crisp bluestone caps, treads that step up to the porch in a rhythm that matches the home. Quiet, durable, intentional — designed to look like it has always been there.
