1800s + New Addition

Scope

The Challenge

Honor the heritage. Build for today.

The owners had inherited an 1800s Central Virginia farmhouse and were adding a modern wing. They wanted an outdoor living center that would feel native to the land — a pool, a travertine deck, and structural walls that would hold the grade without fighting the historic character of the original home.

The new addition was being framed when we walked the site. Every decision — pool placement, utility runs, retaining walls — had to coordinate with the contractor next door, on a property that had been settling for over a century.

The Design

Drawn before a stone moved.

Every Snow Knows project moves through our in-house 3D design process before construction begins. The owners walked through the finished space — pool placement, deck materials, planting beds, sight lines — and signed off on every sheet of the master plan.

The signed master plan.
Sheet L.01 — front yard planting plan.
3D render — pool, hot tub, gazebo seating.
3D aerial — the whole property in context.

“You don’t add a pool to an 1800s farmhouse the way you’d add one to a new build. The grade, the drainage, the way the house breathes — we designed around all of it before we ever broke ground.”

The Snow Knows Way

The Build

Phased, coordinated, in-house.

Snow Knows crews handled excavation, drainage, cinderblock walls, utility trenching, deck installation, and finish grading. Coordinated daily with the addition contractor so neither team ever got in the other’s way.

Pool excavation begins — cinderblock walls go up brick by brick.
Utility trenching — drainage, electric, and gas before any visible craft.
Stepped retaining walls hold the grade and frame the patio terrace.

The Result

Render to reality.

The finished pool sits exactly where the design plan placed it. Travertine deck, raised spa, retaining walls that hold a graceful grade behind the new addition. From signed cover page to drone aerial — the same family team carried it the whole way.
