The Vision
A new estate that needed grounds to match.
A new-construction modern farmhouse estate on a sloped, wooded Western Albemarle lot — main house, detached guest house, and a long Blue Ridge view. The architecture was finished; the grounds were a blank grade. The owners wanted one cohesive outdoor world: a pool and deck for summer, a covered loggia for cooking and shade, and room to practice a putt before dinner.
Our job was to tie it all together — carry the grade with stone, wrap the pool in a deck that matches the house, and plant it so it reads settled from day one. One design language across the whole property: bluestone, stacked stone, and native Virginia plantings.
“On a new build, the house is finished but the land is raw. Good grounds make it look like the two were always together.”
The Snow Knows Way
The Grounds
One property, tied together with stone.
Every zone connects. Terraced stone walls carry the slope from the guest house to the pool. Bluestone runs from the loggia to the deck to the putting green. Nothing feels bolted on — the whole property reads as a single plan.
Zone One — Pool & Deck
A deck built to match the house.
We set the pool surround in large-format bluestone-tone pavers with clean coping and grass-inset borders, framed by stacked-stone walls and a rock outcrop at the tree line. The deck ties straight into the covered living space below the house, so the water and the shade are one continuous outdoor room. (Snow Knows designed and built the deck, coping, and surround; the pool shell was set by a pool contractor partner.)
Zone Two — Loggia & Kitchen
Cook, sit, and stay out of the sun.
Under the upper deck, a covered stone loggia holds a built-in outdoor kitchen — grill, Big Green Egg, and prep run wrapped in stone-veneer columns. Out on the open patio, a long natural-stone gas fire trough anchors the space between the loggia and the pool.
Zone Three — Plantings & Putting Green
Native texture and a place to practice.
Ornamental grasses and perennials soften the stone and the new lawn, planted in mulched beds that read settled from the start. Timber-tread steps set into a river-rock swale handle both the grade and the drainage. Off the back lawn, a synthetic putting green with framing beds gives the estate a short game under the mountains.
